ACHIEVEMENTS

Award from the Academy of Athens to a PhD candidate and Postdoctoral Researchers from the Department of Chemistry

During the final and celebratory session of the Academy of Athens at December 18th, 2025, Naya Stini (PhD student), Dr. Petros Gkizis and Dr. Iro Triandafillidi (postdoctoral researchers_ from the Professor’s Christoforos Kokotos research group (Laboratory of Organic Chemistry, Department of Chemistry) were awarded the «Hildegard-Zervas» award for their research in the field of Organic Chemistry.

The awarded research was published in 2025 in Chemistry-A European Journal and lies in the field of Photocatalysis. It focuses on the development of a light-triggered, cerium-based catalytic system for the C-H alkenylation and alkynylation of alkanes, using an indirect HAT-mediated photocatalytic protocol. International Distinction for the Organic Chemistry Laboratory

The high-level research conducted by the research teams of the Organic chemistry Laboratory at the Department of Chemistry of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens was recognized internationally this year, through the annual global ranking "World's Top 2% Scientists" List », which was published in September 2025.

This ranking is carried out annually by researchers at Stanford University (USA) and is based on data from SCOPUS, the largest international database of scientific publications. Its aim is to provide a reliable and standardized representation of scientific impact, through a composite indicator (c-score), which takes into account:

the number of reports,

  1. the h- index and the adjusted hm-index ,
  2. the contribution in different authorship positions (first, last, sole author),
  3. the ratio of citations/articles,
  4. as well as information for any withdrawn publications.

The ranking covers more than 8 million scientists worldwide and highlights the top 2% in each scientific field. The classification includes 22 disciplines and 174 subfields , with separate coverage for both the entire academic career and the performance of the last year. This year's version ( Version 7) was based on data from SCOPUS as of August 1, 2025 and incorporates data up to the end of the 2024 reporting year. More details are available on the website:

In the 2025 ranking list, 5faculty members of the Organic Chemistry Laboratory were distinguished, of which 4 active and one is retired, while in the overall career ranking, 5faculty members appear, of which 3 are active and 2 are retired. The above confirms the international recognition of the research and academic excellence of the Department of Chemistry at the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens. This is the list of our 6 distinguished members, in alphabetical order:

  1. Valavanidis Athanasios (retired, 2025 + career)
  2. Vougioukalakis Georgios (2025 + career)
  3. Kokotos Georgios (retired, career)
  4. Kokotos Christoforos (2025 + career)
  5. Mavromoustakos Thomas (2025 + career)
  6. Chasapis Christos (2025)
